Metal halide lamps: Compact and intense
Metal halide lamps are high-pressure discharge lamps. And like all lamps of this type, they are efficient high performers: compact und intense, they achieve high luminous efficacy with minimal space requirements.
Metal halide lamps are a further development of the mercury vapour lamp, which is still retrofitted in street lights today but, for reasons of efficiency, will disappear from the market in Europe by 2015 at the latest.
The halogen specialists are conquering more and more applications, including applications in the domestic lighting sphere. This is because of their many merits:
- high luminous efficacy of around 100 lm/W
- long life up to 15,000 operating hours
- good colour rendering properties
- small dimensions permit compact luminaires
- small burners for very good optical control.
These characteristics make metal halide lamps suitable for more than just economical outdoor lighting. They are a recommended option wherever lamp replacement is difficult – e.g. in road lighting, in sports facilities and in industrial halls – or where artworks or merchandise on display need to be brilliantly and efficiently illuminated with no distortion of colours.
