Halogen lamps for automotive lighting
The halogen lamp is the "prototype" of all vehicle lamps – and thanks to new high-performance generations, is still used in millions of vehicles. The halogen lamp types in most widespread use include H1, H4 and H7. The front-liners of the new high-performance generation with innovative bayonet base are H8, H9, H11 and H15.
In recent years, lighting technologists working on the H7 lamp have developed new premium halogen lamps that cast considerably more light onto the road and appreciably extend the range of the driver's forward and peripheral view. These brand lamps achieve a significantly higher intensity of light – and some models also feature the bluish white light that currently enjoys a great deal of popularity.
An very important point: the position of the filament
Halogen lamps are a further development of the incandescent lamp. Like it, are thermal radiators: they generate light by using electricity to heat a tungsten filament. However, halogen lamps work much more efficiently than incandescent lamps. Their bulbs are filled with halogen gas, which slows evaporation of the white-hot filament and reduces blackening of the bulb.
For use in headlights, halogen lamps need to meet special technical requirements. What counts here is precise positioning of the filament. Brand lamps are distinguished by the fact that they observe the statutory requirements to a hundredth of a millimetre. The art of lighting here lies in focusing maximum luminance on the shortest possible piece of filament. The better this is achieved, the more light is cast onto the road – significantly extending the range of visibility and preventing glare for oncoming traffic.
