Computer lighting design

Computers are a valuable tool for the lighting designer. Running special software, they can perform all the lighting calculations needed for a lighting installation.

The number of luminaires required to realise a pre-defined illuminance can be established by the lumen method. The illuminance at relevant points in the room is worked out by computer. Given menu-driven inputs, planning software makes it possible for a full set of lighting calculations to be performed for any lighting installation – from initial rough estimate to fully documented detailed project plan.

As well as furnishing the technical documentation for a project, these programmes can also produce a materials list – showing the number and type of each luminaire required in the room, complete with a description.

For clients, the system offers the advantage of graphic representation – giving them an idea of what the lighting installation will look like.
