General lighting - also referred to as basic or background lighting - is the uniform lighting that gives us an overall picture of the room and enables us to get our bearings. It takes no special account of specific visual tasks performed at different points in the room.

General lighting makes sure that architecture, objects and persons in the room are visible. Supplementary lighting can be used to illuminate individual areas (see also accent lighting, room-related lighting).
