Workplace or task area lighting is designed to cater for specific visual tasks performed at different points in the room. As a rule, workplace/task area lighting supplements the general lighting.

Dedicated workplace lighting is recommended where special lighting requirements need to be met at individual workplaces, e.g. higher illuminance, a certain direction of incident light or a special luminance. See also workplace luminaires, work surface lighting.
