Spots are luminaires used mainly for directional lighting. They are available for use with reflector lamps or in designs with reflectors incorporated into the luminaire. They are primarily suitable for small-scale illuminations, especially in private gardens. As well as static models, there are also mobile designs – often rotatable and swivellable – on earth spike or screw clamp mountings. Mobile spots with electrical sockets can be linked together in a chain.

Spots for exterior lighting have a higher degree of protection. They need to be protected against the ingress of water and solid particles. The materials used in quality luminaires are tested under extreme weather conditions; the luminaires are more weather-resistant and have a longer life.
