Uplights – also known as torchieres or ceiling floods – are generally standard or wall luminaires which cast most of their light onto the ceiling and upper wall surfaces. From there it is reflected back into the room to provide indirect lighting, which many people find agreeable. Where room surfaces are dark, uplights are not suitable for general lighting.
