Recessed luminaires

This term is mostly used for ceiling luminaires. Recessed ceiling luminaires are mounted in cavities or false ceilings; much of them is out of sight (semi-recessed luminaires). In many cases, the light exit opening is flush with the ceiling. The counterpart to the recessed luminaire is the surface-mounted luminaire.
