Compact fluorescent lamps
The compact fluorescent lamp family includes models with and without ballasts integrated in the lamp.
Lamps with integrated ballasts
Lamps with integrated ballast are also called energy-saving lamps. Featuring conventional E14 and E27 screw bases, they are the energy-saving alternative for the direct replacement of incandescent lamps – luminaire design allowing. The higher acquisition cost of the lamps is quickly recouped because their much higher luminous efficacy means that lower power ratings can be used, e.g. 11 W instead of 60 W.
Compact fluorescent lamps with integrated ballast have a long life but, with the exception of special designs, cannot be dimmer-controlled. Quality and comfort – high luminous efficacy, long life, compact dimensions, low weight and non-flicker instant re-starting – are greatest where an electronic ballast (EB) is integrated.
An integrated EB turns a uniquely shaped flat cylindrical lamp with protective prismatic enclosure into an energy-saving light source. However, it does not have a screw base but a GX35 bayonet base.

Lamps without integrated ballasts
Plug-in bases are a characteristic feature of the other line of the compact fluorescent lamp family, which includes compact fluorescent lamps with integrated ballast. In industrial lighting, in particular, these short, compact lamps are now an established alternative to tubular fluorescent lamps. Unlike with lamps with integrated ballast, the ballast is mounted in the luminaire.
The more favourable energy balance is achieved where lamps are operated by electronic (EB) rather than magnetic ballasts. EBs are also available in special dimmable designs; dimmer control is possible only with 4-pin base lamps.
