Sodium vapour lamps

High pressure sodium vapour lamps

High pressure sodium vapour lamps are available with very high luminous efficacy and a colour rendering index Ra 20 - 39 for street lighting or sports training lighting. Lamps with better colour rendering indices from Ra 60 to 69 are predominantly used in industrial lighting. For decorative accent lighting and salesroom lighting, designs are available with a good colour rendering index in the Ra 80 – 89 range.

High pressure sodium vapour lamps require appropriate ballasts and igniters. Some electronic ballasts (EB) make it possible to switch between two light colours, others can control output reduction switches (street lighting). Dimmer control of high pressure sodium vapour lamps requires complex technology and can affect light colour. Dimmable EBs that cause no significant light colour corruption have been developed for some lamp types.

Low pressure sodium vapour lamps

Low pressure sodium vapour lamps have very good luminous efficacy but extremely poor colour rendering properties. This restricts their applications. Because their monochromatic yellow light penetrates fog and mist well and their spectrum is optimally suited for surveillance cameras, these lamps are used for port, tunnel and pedestrian crossing lighting as well as for security lighting. Low pressure sodium vapour lamps require an appropriate ballast for operation.
