Apart from electronic ballasts (EBs), there are also magnetic ballasts for fluorescent lamps: conventional ballasts (CBs) – which are no longer marketed in the European Union because of their poor energy efficiency index – and low-loss ballasts (LLBs). The same devices – tuned to the relevant power rating – are available for compact fluorescent lamps with and without integrated ballast. Performance characteristics and features make electronic ballasts the favourite, however. Where dimmable ballasts are required for lighting management systems, there is no alternative to dimmable EBs.
