Inventor Award 2021 for OLED pioneering work

European Patent Office honors German physicist Karl Leo

OLED displays can nowadays be found in almost all new-generation smartphones and many TV screens. The method developed by Karl Leo for boosting organic semiconductors with electron producing substances (“doping“) makes modern displays brighter, clearer, more efficient, and thus also more environmentally friendly. The German physicist has now received the European Inventor Award 2021 in the "Lifetime Achievement" category for his research. Leo holds the professorship in optoelectronics at Technische Universität Dresden.

The European Patent Office (EPO) presented the award this year for the 15th time. It honors outstanding personalities from Europe and around the world for their exceptional contribution to technological progress and economic growth, thereby improving our everyday lives.

For Leo, it is the third honor in a very short time, following the Jan Rajchmann Award and the Blaise Pascal Medal of the European Academy of Sciences (EURASC).
