Light makes steps safer

Tens of thousands of employees fall on stairs every year

Falls are one of the most common causes of accidents. More than 30,000 reportable falls on stairs in the workplace occur in Germany every year - according to the German Employers' Liability Insurance Association for Energy, Textiles, Electrical and Media Products (BG ETEM). The industry initiative licht.de advises that good lighting in stairwells provides safety and prevents accidents.

According to EN 12464-1, the guideline value for staircase lighting is at least 150 lux. Lighting with 200 lux is more comfortable and safer - and hardly causes any higher operating costs. The lighting should come from above and with additional spotlights from the side and must not dazzle. Light switches must be clearly recognisable and easy to reach. Presence sensors that switch the light on and off automatically or dim it to a minimum are a sensible alternative.
