Light festivals are popular in all parts of Europe. Numerous festivals are organised in the winter months when it gets dark earlier. Because light needs darkness to shine. The travel guide from licht.de presents some light art events:

Lyon places installations throughout the city during the Fête des Lumières from 7 to 10 December. Using state-of-the-art technology, light artists project spectacular video mappings and light installations that tell fascinating stories. Several of them can be found in Tête d'Or Park.

Until 1 January 2024, the British seaside resort of Blackpool will be showing illuminations on the six-mile-long promenade. The Blackpool Illuminations have a long tradition and have been taking place for more than a century.

From 30 November to 21 January, the Amsterdam Light Festival will transform the historic city centre into a modern light installation for the 12th time. Works by 24 artists from eight nations will be on display.

2024 continues straight away
Lux Helsinki starts from 3 to 7 January. The Finnish light festival showcases a wide range of artists who transform well-known buildings and spaces into works of urban art. The event attracts more than half a million visitors every year.

Switzerland is the venue for two events: Lilu takes place in Lucerne from 11 to 21 January. Around 20 light installations around Lucerne's lake basin and in the old town can be visited free of charge.Those who prefer it warm can enjoy a light show in the Jesuit Church.

The Murten Light Festival takes place in the west of Switzerland from 17 to 28 January. More than 20 exhibition areas, the so-called Arteplages, are visited by up to 90,000 visitors every year.
